::Singer::

So I got a new sewing machine for Mother's Day - yip! This is because I decided I wanted to make Heidi a queen-sized quilt - by hand. When I started looking into it and realized this would take more than a year (and that's with a little time devoted to it EACH DAY!), I thought maybe I should find myself a machine. But good quality used sewing machines are hard to come by around here - I guess most people keep them around, "just in case." So Wayne promised to buy me a starter machine for Mother's Day.

Thank you, Wal-Mart! (And Wayne!)

I am now the proud owner of a Singer Prelude - it's nothing fancy, just your basic machine, but I found it fitting that I would receive it for this occasion because I REALLY feel like a mom now. What mom doesn't have a sewing machine? Not only do I plan to make a quilt (or a few quilts), but I'll be fixing a lot of Wayne's stuff for work, making him "kit-helpers" (boot bags, safety arm band for the field, etc.), aprons and baby clothes. And a few cute skirts and dresses for myself! They'll be custom made and in the fabric I want. Can't go wrong with that.

Now to choose the fabric for Heidi's quilt. I really want this piece to be something she will take with her when she moves out and keeps for the rest of her life, so it can't be baby-ish. But it definitely needs to be feminine and chic. Here's a collage of the swatches I have listed as favourites on etsy.com. I'd love your input!

  1. I LOVE the bottom green and black scheme! Second choice would be 3rd row right. Such an aweomse idea! Logan has one from John's Mom that she made when he was born... it's a nice teal and brown scheme.

  4. Oh they are all so pretty! I love three of them - the second down on the left (green/blue/yellow), third down on the right (with the rich purple) and also the one right below it (seafoam/tan). But you can't really go worng - it's going to be so pretty!

  5. What a fun project! I have a sewing machine but never figured out how to use it. I should've off-loaded it to you! Anyway, I love all those fabrics, so cute! My faves would be: maroon top left, the yellow/blue/green one below it and the set to the right of that one. I hope you'll post pictures of your progress.

  6. Well since I built Chelsea a quilt and made a few other quilt projects, I must say I loved the Times Square pattern and the South Seas pattern. They'd move nicely into the next 20 yrs! I love that you've got yourself a sewing machine and you will find that putting together the quilt blocks using the machine TOTALLY fast! Fabrics (and the collection of) can be addicting! I worked at the Wineberry Fabric store for a short stint when the City of Surrey was on strike, and there were ladies who came into the store to get the FIX every week. Their bills were crazy high and they did admit to having PILES of quilting material squirreled away.
    p.s. I so enjoy your blog posts! Great connectivity ! Gotta love cyper technology!
    Take care.... Suzi
    p.s. sorry, I don't have Live Journal or Google account so I logged in an anonymous:)

  7. Have you discovered FatQuarterShop.com? They have an incredible selection and you can order bundles of a complete collection. I don't know what their shipping rates are into Canada though, since I still ship to a friend in WA; but if you don't have any huge stores nearby, it might be worth all the time and gas you'd save traveling around looking.

    Happy Sewing,
    Natasha
